A landmark research study has shown that a targeted teaching intervention accelerates progress in reading and language development for children with Down syndrome. The primary results of the study are now available online, ahead of publication in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. The study was the first large controlled trial of an intervention designed for children with Down syndrome and was led by researchers at Down Syndrome Education International working with colleagues at the Centre for Reading and Language at the University of York. DSE will be publishing a handbook and other resources, and providing training and support services, to help teachers successfully implement the new reading and language intervention. Read more...

Down Syndrome Education International transforms the lives of young people with Down syndrome through
better education.
Our scientific research identifies effective teaching methods. Our
services help families, professionals and organisations to support successful education.
For over 30 years, we have improved understanding of the learning needs of children with Down syndrome
and pioneered effective teaching and therapy approaches.
Our research
Today, we are conducting the first, large randomised controlled trial of a classroom teaching programme
specifically designed for children with Down syndrome. Other current research studies are trialing computer-based
working memory training, investigating early language development, the emergence of autism and autism-like
characteristics in early childhood, problem solving skills, attention, numeracy and more.
Our information resources and services
Through our subsidiary social
enterprise, we offer a wide range of evidence-based information resources online, and
in books, teaching materials and films. We also offer specialist
training and
consulting services worldwide.
Our outreach services are improving support for people with Down syndrome and their families in low
and middle income countries.
Our impact
We work in partnership with an associated US non-profit, Down Syndrome Education USA, and our
subsidiary social enterprise, Down Syndrome Education Enterprises,
to advance scientific research and to deliver publications and services that improve early intervention
and education for children with Down syndrome worldwide.
Together, we undertake research and provide services that help over 100,000 people in over 180 countries
each year.
Your support
We depend on the generous support of families, foundations and companies to undertake new research,
pioneer new teaching techniques, develop new information resources and services, and to provide
support to children and families worldwide.
